It was summer, 1976, when a major psychotic episode ended Corey Doctoroff’s successful career and also wrecks his marriage. He accepts a job selling used cars “until something else comes along,” and becomes the unlikely denizen in a psychedelic world of rituals, easy money, fast women, Quaaludes, cocaine and Jamaican Gold. So begins Corey’s descent and sojourn, mired in a bizarre subculture to which few are privy. By day, he lives an eat-or-be-eaten life on the car lot. By night, his inner self ponders universal mysteries. Corey’s battle to reconstruct himself and reintegrate his two halves is a swirling landscape of extreme mood swings, youthful dalliances, venomous contempt for psychiatrists, a love affair with his social worker, his oddball buddies—Boychik, The Fish, Beach Ball, Half-Deal Harry, and Jaws—illuminating the metaphor for life that was found on stickers pasted to the windows of used cars: “Sold as is—with all faults—no warranty expressed or implied.”
