A comprehensive look at one of the most celebrated photographers of the American frontier The image of the untamed American West persists as one of our country’s most enduring cultural myths, and few photographers have captured more compelling images of the frontier than Timothy H. O’Sullivan. Trained under Mathew Brady, O’Sullivan accompanied several government expeditions to the West—most notably with geologist Clarence King in 1867 and cartographer George M. Wheeler in 1871. Along these journeys, O’Sullivan produced many beautiful photographs that exhibit a forthright and rigorous style formed in response to the landscapes he encountered. Faced with challenging terrain and lacking previous photographic examples on which to rely, O’Sullivan created a body of work that was without precedent in its visual and emotional complexities.
The first major publication on O’Sullivan in more than thirty years, Framing the West offers a new aesthetic and formal interpretation of O’Sullivan’s photographs and assesses his influence on the larger photographic canon. The book features previously unpublished and rarely seen images and serves as a field guide for O’Sullivan’s original prints, presenting them for the first time in sequence with the chronology of their production.

Photographer and curator Terry Toedtemeier (1947?2008) began his career in the 1970s with extensive photographic experiments to capture his close circle of friends and colleagues. Largely self-taught, he began to attract wider critical attention with his landscape images, initially snapshots from his moving car and later exquisite compositions influenced by his deep understanding of both historical and contemporary photography traditions of the American West. His haunting photographs often focused on the Oregon desert and coastline, and magnificent basalt formations of the Pacific Northwest. Sun, Shadows, Stone is the first scholarly monograph of the photography of Terry Toedtemeier. His photographs were featured in the nationally traveling exhibition Framing the West: The Survey Photographs of Timothy H. O?Sullivan and are in the collections of many museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Philadelphia Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

"In the early nineteenth century, Prince Maximilian Of Wied traveled the length of the Missouri River on an excursion to uncover what he called "the natural face of North America"-its landscapes, flora and fauna, and particularly its Native inhabitants. Among his small party was the young Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-1893), who would prove to be one of the most accomplished and prolific artists to visit the American frontier. Departing St. Louis in April 1833, Bodmer and Maximilian would travel over 2,500 miles through the heart of North America before reaching Fort McKenzie in present-day Montana, spending time among the Omaha, Otoe, and Pawnee; the Yankton and Santee Sioux; and the Assiniboines, Plains Cree, Blackfeet, Piegans, Bloods, and Gros Ventre. At their winter quarters at Fort Clark, they made intimate acquaintances among the Mandan and Hidatsa. He has been photographing examples of the West’s changing vernacular landscape and vanishing roadside landmarks for more than 40 years.
