William Heffer started his bookselling and stationery business in 1876. By the 20th century it had become a Cambridge institution & in 2016 the bookselling name celebrates its 140th anniversary. This is the story of Heffers bookselling, stationery & printing, enriched by the recollections of former employees, customers & authors; further enhanced by a fascinating personal collection of photographs, press cuttings & other 'memorabilia' of the firm's activities gathered by the late Winifred Anstee and others. Besides the day-to-day activities of the business & working at the firm, the collection covers staff outings, Heffers family occasions & other key events, some unexpected, dating back to the early 20th century.
