This book covers all C&amp;O depots, towers, and ancillary buildings from the Virginia Central era through the modern C&amp;O structures of the 1940-50s. Emphasis is on depots and towers (cabins) with considerable data also on the buildings that were necessary to carry out other operations. Roundhouses and engine houses are sampled. Appendices also sample Hocking Valley and Pere Marquette structures without going into great detail. This is intended to be the standard reference for C&amp;O structures for both the modeler and historian. Both C&amp;O official drawings and drawings prepared by Bob Hundman complement the extensive use of photos. The treatment is basically chronological: 1860s-1870s, 1880s; 1890-1920, 1920-1950. 144 pages.

Compendium of material dealing with the experience of the Virginia Central Railroad (later C&amp;O) during the War Between the States. Included are: Articles by Prof. Charles W. Turner dealing with the broad issues of Confederate railroading and how Va. Central fit into that picture. The second section is a series of letters about railroading during the war by a former Virginia Central conductor. His exploits include moving troops and other exciting first-hand adventures. Chapter three deals with the Va. Central lines west of Staunton. The fourth section gives details about the motive power and rolling stock of the Va. Central during the war years, and statistical background on its operations taken from annual reports. Although illustrations showing Va. Central operations during the war are scarce in the extreme, maps and diagrams are used where possible along with photos of equipment used during the war taken in later years as well as material on typical railroad equipment of the era.

Chesapeake & Ohio History Series #17: Virginia Central In The Civil War

This is a complete history of GE locomotives on C&amp;O starting with the famous U-25B model in 1963. This was GE's first entry into the locomotive field since its early experimental units in the 1930s. The model helped bring C&amp;O into the higher horsepower "Second Generation" era. C&amp;O had 38 of the U25Bs and though they did not break EMD's hold on the C&amp;O motive power fleet, they began the build-up of GE units that would occur in the 1970s and 1980s. The C&amp;O's GE "U-Boat" units are covered in detail both during their operation on C&amp;O/B&amp;O and in the Chessie System Era. The models included the U30B, U30C, U23B, and B30-7 models that became a commonplace sight on C&amp;O/Chessie System trains. Complete roster and mechanical data. Included are scores of color photos in B&amp;O, C&amp;O and Chessie paint schemes.
