"Black Watch Diary, A Sequel" is a true account of the cocky young fly-boys of the U.S. Air Force 59th All Weather Jet Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS). Their 1950s and 60s Cold War mission was defending Canada and the U.S. from Soviet nuclear bombers coming over the short arctic routes. Sussessful 1949 atomic tests by the Soviets convinced analysts that thousands of nuclear weapons could soon become the first direct threat to the Continental U.S. and Canadian territories. The rush was on to build a network of land-based, long-range radar stations across Alaska, Canada, and Greenland; then position squadrons of all-weather airborne radar-equipped jet interceptors. In October, 1952, the 59th FIS was moved from Otis Air Force Base Massachussets, to Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada. In "Black Watch Diary, A Sequel," author Josh Batchelder. Lt. Col., USAF, Retired, describes his experiences at the "Goose." as well as those had by many of his fellow airmen. Mr. Batchelder chronicles the triumphs, and tragedies experienced while flying hazardous all-weather jet interceptor defense missions as well as the high spirits and humorous accounts of the everyday lives of rebellious fly-boys stationed at The Goose.
