This work challenges the very idea of England and what it means to be English. Dr. Jones has examined the origins of the sense of English identity that persists today and this book reveals a new perspective on how it came about. Many leaders have recognized the importance of history in the construction of a national identity. Dr. Jones reveals that during the reign of Henry VIII a false view of the English past was created in order to promote England as a sovereign and independent nation state. This view of England's past became one of the most powerful influences at work on English outlook and behavior. While the techniques associated with this process of mass deception have become more familiar, the legacy of their effects is sometimes less clear. Dr. Jones identifies this legacy and argues that a deliberately-conceived misunderstanding of their past made the English forget that they were Europeans and created a narrowly xenophobic outlook.

Edwin Jones sets out to show that a phenomenological analysis of meaning can contribute to a theory of creativity in several ways. It can clarify the concept of creative expression and resolve its paradoxical appearance. Creativity must have its roots in already existing meanings and at the same time has to generate new meanings.To illustrate, Jones shows that a phenomenological analysis can render more comprehensible the spiritual dilemma suffered by Cézanne. The artist could not render intellectually understandable to himself what he was attempting as an artist. A phenomenological approach shows, according to Jones, that the dilemma was generated in Cézanne's mind in part by a certain implicit Galilean concept of Nature that Cézanne brought to his work -- a concept that phenomenology has only recently begun to dispel by demonstrating a parallel between creativity in philosophy and creativity in art. Jones employs Heidegger and Cézanne as concrete examples and Husserl and Merleau-Ponty as other important elements in his essay.Ultimately, Jones argues for a parallel between creativity in science and philosophy, and creativity in the arts. His is an original synthesis of the work of the three thinkers he interprets and of Cézanne's late work, and his study should be of considerable interest to philosophers, art critics, and artists of a theoretical or reflective bent.

John Lingard and the Pursuit of Historical Truth

<p>John Lingard (1771-1851) is too little known to English readers. This book describes how he postulated and applied for the first time in England, the main principles and methodology of modern source criticism in his History of England (1819-30). His work is compared and contrasted with other English historians - predecessors, contemporaries and successors. Edwin Jones reveals the extent to which he was the unacknowledged "father" of the modern revisionist movement in English historical writing. Lingard broke free from his contemporary culture and created a methodology of scientific source criticism which he applied to original materials covering all aspects of English history up to 1688. Thereby he created the conditions in which historical writing could become an independent discipline, concerning itself primarily with the pursuit and exposition of the truth about the past, in stark contrast with more celebrated English historians who saw history as a branch of philosophy or "fine literature". Based on an intensive study of Lingard's work, this book challenges the view that there was nothing in England during the nineteenth century to compare with the scientific advances in historiography on the Continent. At the 150th anniversary of Lingard's death, Edwin Jones's study is a long overdue tribute to the work of a truly great English historian.</p>
