Richard Samuel Roberts, a black photographer, had operated a commercial studio in Columbia from 1920 until his death in 1936. When his studio was closed down shortly thereafter, his negatives were stored under the family home. Not until 1977 did a chance visit by a field archivist from the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina reveal the fact that Roberts's negatives still existed. Almost miraculously, most were still in good condition. In their scope and camera artistry they constitute an eloquent pictorial record, documenting the life and times of the black inhabitants of a southern city from just after the First World War until well into the Depression. Especially noteworthy is Roberts's depiction of the black middle-class community. Those unfamiliar with the South of the 1920s and 1930s are unaware that there was a flourishing black middle-class in the southern cities. Here, captured by Roberts's camera, is ample evidence of its existence. Some 200 of his best pictures have been chosen for publication in A True Likeness. They show men, women, and children in the studio and elsewhere, people at work and at play, their homes, automobiles, and other possessions. Roberts also traveled to other cities and into rural South Carolina, always with camera and film.

This memoir is a first-hand recollection of life in the slums of Seattle during the 1940's and beyond. Seattle’s First Avenue reeks of excitement. It is a smell—in a place of littered wine bottles—of love found, lost, and purchased. Since 1851, Seattle’s gambling, prostitution, drinking, and debauchery have centered on First Avenue. The people who lived and worked here are not high society. They are survivors, comprising a community where there is bonding and friendship. People from the affluent north end come to the avenue for amusement. People from the poor south end provided that entertainment. The elected officials and police accepted graft; they take bribes to look the other way. During World War II, the special electricity between the sexes happened because husbands, wives, boys, and girls were separated for long periods of time. Men were fighting in faraway places while girls were here at home, lonely, looking for and needing love. Human beings can be without intimacy for a while—but not forever. Atmosphere and loneliness were the formula for adopting new, expedient moral values. Lonely people can and do meet the opposite sex while looking for human companionship on the avenue. And where there is “sin,” there is money to be made. These are the sights and sounds as seen by a twelve-year-old eyewitness.

Thomas L. Johnson's remarkable life, wherein he was born into slavery before going on to a successful career as a minister and missionary, is told here in his own words. 
Until the age of twenty-eight, Johnson lived under the yolk of his slave masters. As a servant he was subject to abuse for trivial matters, such as not knowing the difference between right and left. Sold on by his master whilst still a teenager, the author had already self-taught himself rudiments of literacy from letters and newspapers left around his master's house. Luckily, his new master's son was kind, and helped Johnson with vocabulary and letters. This knowledge helped Johnson keep aware of developments - the abolitionist movement, which sought freedom for all slaves, was of particular interest, as were the politics of Britain, which had already outlawed slavery. 
Significantly, Thomas also became interested in religion, learning many words, expressions and lessons from the Bible. After emancipation, this knowledge spurred him on to join the priesthood. He travelled to New York, and soon discovered his natural talent for speaking. A black preacher so soon after emancipation was an unusual sight; it wasn't long before Johnson had made friends and began to contemplate further travels to spread God's word. Sure enough, his talents saw him permanently resettle in England, and embark upon travels even farther afield.
