Located in Langan Park, a municipal park in the Spring Hill section of Mobile, Alabama, the museum houses its collection in a 2002 facility designed by TAG (The Architects Group, Inc.) of Mobile. This volume presents the first ever history of the museum, its supporters, and its collection. The essay "A Bold and Far-reaching Aspiration: A History of the Mobile Museum of Art" by local historian John S. Sledge chronicles how through the efforts of a group of civic-minded individuals the museum came into existence. Roy Hoffman's "Museum People: A Community Tableau" offers an account of his interviews with museum supporters, personal observations from those who have contributed to the museum's evolution. And providing an overview of a permanent collection of some 10,000 works of art, "From a Curator's Perspective: Building a Collection" by Paul W. Richelson reflects on the collection's growth. with commentaries and photographs accompanying a wealth of selected works, from paintings to sculptures to American crafts, The Mobile Museum of Art: Selections from fifty Years of Collecting presents the first scholarly overview of highlights from this important Southern art museum collection.</p>
