Humphrey began his diary on August 3, 1948, when he had already been Director of the Division of Human Rights for two years. His motivations seem to have been to record events not in the public eye, to augment his memory for his day-to-day work, to reveal opinions he was barred from expressing in public, and to provide a foundation for his later academic work. In addition to highly annotated diary entries, the volume contains illustrations, a bibliography of Humprey's writings, and appendices of the organization and staff of the UN. No subject index.
