Sir Walter Scott's descriptions of Scotch history and scenery and Charles Dickens' unforgettable characters helped popularize the form. In rebellion against the Victorians Samuel Butler satirized hypocrisy and convention in 'The Way of the Flesh'; E. M.0 Forster studied emotional conflicts between individuals in'The Longest Journey' and 'A Passage to India'; D. H. Lawrence used symbolism in 'Lady Chatterly's Lover' and 'Women in Love'. The Americans were not far behind, as Harold Frederic offered convincing descriptions of social problems in 'The Damnation of Theron Ware'; Henry James pioneered a psychological realism in 'A Portrait of a Lady' and 'The Ambassadors'; F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby' compellingly described the human condition. The German author Thomas Mann brought to the novel a mythological psychology in his "Joseph" series, and Mr. Raleigh argues that 'The Holy Sinner' is a coda of the series.
