A young man, Barker, returns to the family home in historic South Carolina as he searches for the answers to the pain of the loss of his parents in a tragic accident, for which he blames himself. Woven around the legendary properties of the quince fruit, the symbol of love and happiness for the ancient Greeks, elucidation emerges from unexpected sources, particularly through an elderly man by the name of Gunter, who advocates a way of life he initially scoffs. At the same time, his ardent love for Polly, a local heiress, also undergoes radical alteration as he matures and gains further insight.
