Cellini, according to himself, seems to have lived a very full life, and his account of his exploits, though grandiloquent and somewhat suspect, are always entertaining. Historians have considered this work as a prime example of the emergence of modern individualism during the Renaissance.

Resuming the thread of Jonson's biography, we may view the decade which elapsed between 1616 and 1626 as the third main period in his life. The year 1616 was marked, as I have already said, by the publication of the first folio of his collected works. It also witnessed the representation of his comedy ' The Devil is an Ass, ' by the King's Men at Blackfriars. This play cannot be reckoned one of J onson's masterpieces; though it counts an excellently outlined coxcomb, Fitzdottrell, among its dramatis persons, and perhaps the only interesting female character he ever drew, in that coxcomb's wife. How far it was successful on the stage at the time of its first representation we do not know. But there is some reason to suspect that it failed to please; for Jonson wholly ceased writing for the theatres between this date and the year 1625, when want and illness forced him once more to court the public. That Jonson never loved the playwright's calling is certain. He seems to have felt himself born to rebuke vice and folly; and since society refused to be scourged with patience and submission, he withdrew in dudgeon from the irksome task of writing scenes to amuse its idleness. In an ode to himself, printed in the ' Underwoods, ' we read this stanza: --And since our dainty age Cannot endure reproof, Make not thyself a page To that strumpet the stage, But sing high and aloof, Safe from the wolf's black jaw and the dull ass's hoof. It should be remarked that the last two lines of this ode are borrowed from the close of the 'Apologetical Dialogue ' appended to the 'Poetaster.' The little poem may, therefore, have been written about the time when Jonson first resolved to abandon comedy and try the less...</p>

<p>When we try to picture to ourselves the intellectual and moral state of Europe in the Middle Ages, some fixed and almost stereotyped ideas immediately suggest themselves. We think of the nations immersed in a gross mental lethargy; passively witnessing the gradual extinction of arts and sciences which Greece and Rome had splendidly inaugurated; allowing libraries and monuments of antique civilisation to crumble into dust; while they trembled under a dull and brooding terror of coming judgment, shrank from natural enjoyment as from deadly sin, or yielded themselves with brutal eagerness to the satisfaction of vulgar appetites. Preoccupation with the other world in this long period weakens man's hold upon the things that make his life desirable. Philosophy is sunk in the slough of ignorant, perversely subtle disputation upon subjects destitute of actuality. Theological fanaticism has extinguished liberal studies and the gropings of the reason after truth in positive experience. Society lies prostrate under the heel of tyrannous orthodoxy. We discern men in masses, aggregations, classes, guilds—everywhere the genus and the species of humanity, rarely and by luminous exception individuals and persons. Universal ideals of Church and Empire clog and confuse the nascent nationalities. Prolonged habits, of extra-mundane contemplation, combined with the decay of real knowledge, volatilise the thoughts and aspirations of the best and wisest into dreamy unrealities, giving a false air of mysticism to love, shrouding art in allegory, reducing the interpretation of texts to an exercise of idle ingenuity, and the study of Nature (in Bestiaries, Lapidaries, and the like) to an insane system of grotesque and pious quibbling. The conception of man's fall and of the incurable badness of this world bears poisonous fruit of cynicism and asceticism, that twofold bitter almond, hidden in the harsh monastic shell. The devil has become God upon this earth, and God's eternal jailer in the next world.</p>
