These sketches document three visits to the Mediterranean--in 1928-29, 1950-51, and 1959--which were instrumental in shaping the ideas of Louis Kahn, America's greatest postwar architect. They include Kahn's early drawings of the Tuscan hill town of San Gimignano, whose towers would later appear in his Brutalist buildings; and his later more interpretive and emotion-charged sketches of the Valley of the Kings in Egypt and St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. This catalogue accompanies a December 1996 exhibition of Kahn's drawings with the same title at the Jewish Museum in New York, organized by the authors, who teach art history at Williams College.

Every so often, the organizers of an art exhibition attempt to address head-on issues of interest in the world of contemporary politics. Russian Jewish Artists in a Century of Change, 1890-1990 represents such an undertaking. With the break-up of the Soviet Union, countries and cultures under Soviet control suddenly opened up to the West. In the past few years, as information has begun to flow more freely, art historians have found themselves having to re-examine their subjects and concerns in the light of newly accessible information. From Court Jews to the Rothschilds 1600-1800 is a groundbreaking study that examines the role of Jews as agents in the service of many kinds of patrons, from local nobles to emperors. In addition to collecting and commissioning precious jewelry and works of art for the court, they provided all manner of goods, including military equipment and supplies. Many Jews also made important contributions to architecture by financing and implementing large building projects. Some maintained the ruler's mint, collected taxes, and assisted in diplomatic negotiations. Court Jews often became extremely wealthy and powerful members of society, some of them adopting the lifestyles, dress, and even architecture of their patrons, while remaining true to their religious origins.
