The Residue of Dreams is the first English-language publication of the classical-style poems of Jao Tsung-i (b. 1917), a prominent artist-calligrapher, scholar-poet, and polymath living in Hong Kong. Jao's poems in various traditional forms reflect the tumultuous history of twentieth-century China, but also demonstrate the enduring resonance of its classical culture. The Residue of Dreams contains a broad-ranging selection of Jao's poems covering topics from the Second World War and his travels in Southeast Asia, to Nietzsche and the scribes of medieval Dunhuang. The poems give a vivid impression of one of the most erudite minds of our time, and show a new side of contemporary Chinese literature that has mostly been overlooked in English-language publications. All poems are presented both in the original Chinese text and in English translation, accompanied by scholarly notes with identification of many of Jao's allusions and cultural references. The introduction places Jao's poetry in the context of modern Chinese literary studies and elucidates its cultural background for general readers.

This work is a translation of the Xiang'er commentary to the Daodejing and Jao Tsung-i's (1917-2018) supplemental notes and analysis. Jao Tsung-i offers a historically and hermeneutically rich study of the Xiang'er Commentary, discovered in the Mogao caves at Dunhuang in the final years of the Qing Dynasty, and its author Zhang Daoling. Opening a new and fascinating window into the early reception of the Daodejing, Jao Tsung-i also uncovers the important influence texts such as the Scripture of Great Peace (Taiping jing) had on Celestial Masters Daoism and the construction of the Xiang'er commentary.

<div>Between 1978 and 1979, Professor Jao Tsung-i lectured at École Pratique des Hautes Études in France. During this period, he studied extensively the Dunhuang manuscripts taken to France and discovered that the scrolls contained sketches on their ends and on the back of the manuscripts. He thoroughly studied these sketches and later he researched the same type of line drawing on the Dunhuang manuscripts housed in the British Museum. His finds were published by the École française d'Extrême-Orient in a book entitled The Line Drawing of Dunhuang. This was the first publication in this field, in which Professor Jao demonstrated using firsthand material showing this form of early Chinese human figure painting, a field that has long been neglected. This work also presented precious information on paintings during the Tang Dynasty. The book was first launched in Chinese and French. Its rarity led Jao Tsung-i Petite Ecole, HKU to republish this academic work in Chinese, English and Japanese. These new editions are illustrated with Professor Jao's sketches in Dunhuang style.</div>

This album recorded 81 pieces of Professor Jao's work in 2004. All paintings and calligraphies are full of strength and motion, they outbreak all boundaries of past masters. Many items are of large size, such magnificent spirit is rarely seen even in the past masters; Wen Zheng Ming had Jao's elegance but not the strength, and Wang Duo had his strength but not the depth. Professor Jao's use of ink and brush is so versatile that gives his work a unique style. By viewing these art pieces, we figured that Prof Jao has explored new horizons. The album illustrates not only the achievement of Professor Jao Tsung-I, but also projects the everlasting nature of Chinese art.
