<p>This book takes a brief historical look at the actual unpretentious canalside house where, during the Second World War, Anne Frank wrote the diary that has now become world famous. Central to the book is the period when Anne, with her family and four others, hid from the German occupiers in the "back annexe". After betrayal and deportation only Anne's father, Otto Frank, survived the war. The discovery and publication of the diary--now the most translated book to come out of the Netherlands--evoked interest in the former hiding place, and by the early fifties visits had already begun.</p>
