Armed with information and insight gleaned from immersion in the rich Moravian archives, the author recounts here the details of Moravian life during the turbulent years of the American Revolution. The result is a story of the courage, the struggles, and the strengths of one of the most distinctive minority groups in American culture. The Brethren had been permitted by an act of Parliament to refuse military induction without going to jail and to affirm rather than to swear their public oaths In addition, a North Carolina law of 1755 allowed them to set up and support their own parish government, a right denied to all other non-Anglican settlers. Although the industrious inhabitants of Wachovia had good reason for remaining neutral in this war, they endured not only the mistrust but also the de3predations of Patriots and Tories alike, Residents in an area in which active military operations were taking place, the Moravians were required to exercise tact and forbearance in order to maintain both the security and the integrity of their settlement. This study brings into clear relief certain little-known facets of the war in the back country. It shows how the religious faith of the Moravians, combined with a thoroughgoing knowledge of political realities, enabled them to survive the war without losing either their land or the commercial advantages they had enjoyed since the founding of Bethabara in 1753. The author closes his account with a discussion of the post-Revolutionary trends that brought radical change to the Moravian way of life. This book provides an expanded understanding of the thought and behavior of Moravian people in North Carolina during a stressful and difficult period. It is a splendid of history received from primary sources and restored with style and vigor.

The Last Days of Big Grassy Fork recounts newspaperman Hunter James's attempts to save his 100-year-old family farm and homestead from extinction. Wise, irreverent, pugnacious, and often hilarious, James fights back against the galloping urbanization of his beloved North Carolina piedmont. Interweaving current affairs and family history, James details the growth of the Winston-Salem area as a center of Moravian piety and later as the world's largest tobacco manufacturing center. This personal history shows he is not the only James to have had a difficult time fitting in with the neighbors' idea of progress; his family's trouble in the Piedmont began early. In 1904 his grandfather was flooded out of a brothel in his birthday suit, and he later scandalized the local Baptist church with drunken sermons, exposing the dark secrets of the congregation. James's unique sense of the absurd, and his willingness to play the fool, make for entertaining reading as each of his efforts at preservation fail miserably. He accidentally torches a neighbor's barn in an attempt to burn off his best pasture land, as was always done in the past; he squanders enormous amounts of money vainly trying to save his farm by becoming the piedmont's preeminent lord of the manor, vintner, wine snob, and horseman; and he finally seals his own doom when in alliance with his neighbors he inadvertently creates the "world's largest garbage pit." The book ends with an eloquent plea for a true agrarianism in the modern South, for the need to strike a balance between the call for industrial expansion and the desire to preserve the land.

In March 1987, the Reverend Jerry Falwell and the national news media found themselves in rare agreement: Jim Bakker, the charismatic, cash-hungry televangelist, was an accomplished sinner but a rather unconvincing penitent. The story had just broken that Bakker had fornicated with Jessica Hahn, a New York church secretary, and then tried to pay her off with $256,000. Once exposed, Bakker weepily begged Falwell to help him steer his ministry through the scandal. Falwell assented―but then demanded Bakker's resignation when he learned that the Hahn affair only hinted at Bakker's profligacy.
