Martin Luther, the hero of the reformation: 1483-1546

1898. A study of the life of Martin Luther, German religious reformer. Luther was an Augustinian monk and the professor of biblical exegesis at Wittenberg, where in 1517 he posted his critique of the Roman Catholic Church's practices, the Ninety-Five Theses, which are usually regarded as the original document of the Reformation. From that point on, he found himself at the center of a violent religious upheaval in Germany. His main assertion was that man is justified by faith alone, and not by works. This belief led him to propose the abolition of many church rituals and the Pope's authority.

"The Christian Faith" is Henry Eyster Jacobs' magnum opus. It is a systematic theology of the Christian faith written in a catechetical format from a Confessional Lutheran perspective. The work is written in a series of questions and answers on various doctrinal topics. Throughout the work, Jacobs defends his views through use of Scripture and the Lutheran fathers. This text is readable enough to be studied by the layman but with enough depth to teach the learned pastor and scholar.

This volume is the magnum opus of Henry Eyster Jacobs' theological career. This work is an extensive systematic theology aimed at providing the first theological textbook written in America for Lutheran students and pastors. In this work, Jacobs gives a broad yet accessible treatment of Christian theology. He does so in the form of questions and answers. Each point is defended with Scripture, and extensive use of the Lutheran fathers. Jacobs does not, however, slavishly follow the 17th century scholastics, but is willing to utilize further theological developments, even from those of other traditions. Jacobs uses highly accessible language, so that this text is usable to the layman, while having enough depth to aid educated pastors and scholars in the theological task. This book is released in two separate volumes. This second volume covers law and gospel, the means of grace, the church, and eschatology.
