It links together and forms an essential part of many branches of physical science formerly thought to be unconnected. Moreover, it is exceedingly simple. Many of the calculations it involves can be as well performed by elementary methods as by more advanced. Indeed, it often happens that the easiest algebra is sufficient. It is, however, seldom possible to dispense with algebra altogether.All the mathematical works on thermo-dynamics we possess at present make use of the higher mathematics. There does not appear to have been any attempt made up to now to meet the wants of that large and intelligent class of non-mathematical readers and students who desire to become acquainted with the principal parts of the subject. The present work, it is hoped, will supply the deficiency.In the following pages, elementary methods of calculation are alone employed. In the two principal chapters and in one or two others, the mathematics are mostly limited to the very easiest algebra and the definitions of the sine and cosine of an angle.No more space is devoted to descriptions of experiments than is sufficient to render them intelligible.
