When people mention 'the domino effect, they are typically talking about setting up regular dominos into some kind of design in order to tip the first one and begin a chain reaction. But there's another type of domino effect in which a 2-inch tall domino can topple a larger domino, which can topple an even larger domino, and by the thirty-first domino you knocked over something 3,000 feet higher than Mt. Everest. 
And so it is with Colossians, a treasure trove of proverbial dominos, each holding enormous capacity to topple things far exceeding its size. When arranged together they hold the possibility of tipping fresh movements of awakening. That's what happened from the moment Jesus began calling disciples to follow him. One life tipped into another life, which tipped into a family, which tipped into a village, and a town, and a region. 
The dominoes tipped from the Upper Room with 120 people to the Day of Pentecost with 3,000 and all the way to the present day and some two billion Christians around the world. The dominoes are still falling. Impossible things keep happening. And Great Awakenings are still on the horizon.

It happened on perhaps the best day of his life so far'the day before the day Jesus would make the journey to the worst day of his life. Jesus and three of his disciples gathered on a high mountain where Jesus was transfigured right before their eyes. The voice of God spoke three thunderously piercing words into he minds and hearts of those disciples. They were as follows:LISTEN TO HIM.Those words now come to us, the present-day disciples of Jesus. The forty days of Lent open up a journey for the top of Transfiguration Mountain to the bottom of the Valley of the Cross. These forty days provide forty steps, if you will, to lean in and listen deeply to Jesus. As we do so we find the way of the cross is the road to resurrection. In the Gospels, we see what it looks like when the Holy Spirit perfectly and completely inhabits, possesses, and empowers a human being in the midst of the fallen, broken world in which we live. Jesus does some explicit teaching about the Holy Spirit, but far greater is the demonstration of the Spirit we witness through virtually every aspect of his life. 
A disciple of Jesus must become a student of Jesus in every conceivable fashion. As we are baptized into his death, we are raised into his life. As we are raised into his life, we are filled with his Spirit. As we are filled with his Spirit, we learn to think after his thoughts and to discern his mind to do the stuff of his work. 
In this daily devotional, J.D. Walt examines the shortest Gospel and poses the question: What might we learn about the person and work of the Holy Spirit through a close examination of the person and work of Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah? And how might we proceed accordingly?

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever. Isaiah 40:8. 
Consider the stark simplicity and brazen boldness of this word from the prophet Isaiah. Everything is ephemeral. Only one thing is eternal: The Word of God. Can we possibly be reminded enough that everything around us is passing away save one thing: the Word of God? Can I possibly be encouraged enough to build my life on the singular enduring reality of the Word of God? First Word. Last Word. God's Word. 
This is the point of this 28-entry book. Each day we will gather around a different text from somewhere across the Bible. The invitation will be to allow the Scripture text itself to speak both the first and the last word of our day. Write the text for the day in a journal, on a notecard, a white board, a chalk board, and make it a simple act of worship each morning to read it aloud as the first word of the day and to read it aloud at the close as the last word of the day. 
Along the way we will reflect together on how to increase the priority and prominence and wovenness of the Word of God in our every day lives. If we will give ourselves to the gentle work of this way of walking together, I suspect we will find pathways of delight and devotion winding through the wilderness of this world and the sanctuaries of our souls we never imagined existed.
