Augustine, having read Cicero' s works, commended'them for their eloquence; but he passed this sentence upon them, They are not sweet, because the name of Jesusis not in them. And Bernard's saying is near the same, If thou writest, it doth not relish with me, unless I read Jesus there; if thou disputest or conferrest, it doth not relish well with me, unless Jesus sound there. Indeed all we say is but unsavory, if it be not seasoned with this salt, I determined not to know any thing among you, (saith Paul,) save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. He resolved with' him self, before he preached among the Corinthians, that this should be the Only point Of knowledge, that he would profess'himself to'have skill in; and that, in the course of his ministry he would labor to bring them to: this he made the breadth, and length, and depth, and'height of his know ledge yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge, of Christ Jesus my Lord. In reformation era Preston much of the population, including the gentry, still hung on to Roman Catholicism. When the opening battles of the Civil War were fought Preston was staunchly royalist and functioned as the headquarters for Royalists from the surrounding area. Our author was not cowed and Ambrose publicity insisted on his puritanical approach and Presbyterian faith. As Preston became a field of battle, torn between the King and the country, Ambrose was plunged into danger. His influential friends and upstanding reputation were able to save him after two separate arrests on religious grounds. His fervour and conviction are perfectly conveyed in this work. He shows in the work a marked difference from Catholic theologians, eschewing a heavy reliance on saints as was common at the time and even scolding those who enjoy music too much, eloquently but severely comparing all worldly pleasure to pebbles by comparison to the pearls and gold of Christ. In other ways he was a man of his time, unwilling to readily accept the idea of direct interaction with God as the norm for widespread Christian prayer. Ambrose served the Presbyterian community of Lancashire well during his life and continues to serve historians and theological scholars well today. Despite his severe religious persuasion, Ambrose was an exceptionally clear writer who formed logical, cogent arguments, a skill held by few writers generally but markedly rare in chroniclers of his age. This book was written after a serious illness which led the author to meditate deeply on what the Lord Jesus had done for him. He considers in detail different facets of the person and work of Christ. The work is divided into five sections. Book I is an introduction to the subject, in which the author urges the reader to focus on Jesus exclusively. Book II considers the eternal generation of the Son and “the great treaty in eternity [between] God and Christ to save souls.” Book III considers Christ as promised throughout the Old Testament in “covenants of promise” manifested to Adam, Abraham, Moses, David, and Israel. Book IV contains six parts that address Christ’s conception, the years of His ministry, His suffering on the cross, His resurrection, His ascension, and His intercession. Finally, Book V examines Christ’s second coming, Judgment Day, and His relationship with the redeemed for all eternity. Looking unto Jesus has been compared to the writings of John Bunyan due to its impact on many Christians in their walk with God. The author follows every major doctrinal section with practical application aimed at the heart. On the subject of temptation he writes, “Christ was tempted that he might succor them that are tempted: never art thou tempted, O my soul, but Christ is with thee in the temptation: he hath sent his Spirit into thy heart to make intercession for thee there; and he himself is in heaven, making intercession and praying for thee there.” Isaac Ambrose was born in England in the year 1604. He was a Puritan nonconformist during a turbulent time of English history and suffered ejection from the pulpit as a result of the Act of Uniformity of 1662. Despite the political and social upheaval surrounding him, it has been remarked that his writings are surprisingly free of controversy, focusing mainly on experiential Christianity.
