Acclaimed photographer Howard Schatz broke new ground in the 1990s with his books WATER DANCE and POOL LIGHT, two collections of luminous photographs of dancers, some clothed and some nude, all taken underwater. His underwater photography has been called uncanny, lithe and athletic, exquisitely real, and mysterious, and has been widely imitated in art and advertising. The dancers seem to transcend time and space to become floating, ethereal objects. Schatz's new underwater photographs are shot in a state-of-the-art, custom-built pool fitted with studio lights and covered with a giant dome to regulate temperature. The results are stunning. His unique images---at once lyrical, fantastic, and palpably real---express the beauty of inspired movement magically free of the restrictions of gravity.

About 25 years ago, Howard Schatz and Beverly J. Ornstein went to drop off some film from a previous day's shoot at a lab in the commercial area south of Market Street in San Francisco. There they encountered an astonishing scene of what seemed to be thousands of people, many in elaborate costumes and makeup, and some totally or nearly naked: men and women (though precise gender was, with some, not easy to determine) taking part in a theatrical world of countless fantasies. The Folsom Street Fair is held every year in San Francisco on the last Sunday in September, celebrating the world of kink and bondage, discipline and sadomasochism (BDSM). The encounter that day in 1991 became the trigger for a serious photographic exploration now spanning a quarter century. Schatz rented an exhibitor's space at the fair, built an outdoor studio and made portraits of attendees year after year. These portraits are the creative, intriguing, amazing and sometimes shocking result of his exploration.

From the beginning of my professional career my main interest, my motivating force and passion, has been to explore and experiment, search-ing for imagery that would surprise and delight me in my quest to ex-press what's deep inside. One of many areas of my on-going interest has been the exploration of the relationship between two subjects: the visual, graphic, emotional, social, physical and even spiritual dynamic resonating and resulting from such combinations.I am in search of the electric, sometimes eccentric and always compel-ling connections possible with a combination of two whether dancers, athletes, mothers and newborns, gymnasts and even inanimate objects. Sometimes they were brought together intentionally: I've found other images that speak to each other in ways I had not previously noticed. The connections are sometimes subtle, sometimes not. I've scoured for pairings of every sort. Not necessarily the Shakespearean form of heroic couplets, but couplets nevertheless. I have tried to look for both the unexpected and the unusual in my art. A photographic odyssey into the world of twos is a natural outgrowth of my ongoing search for surprise and delight. I continue to make new images in pursuit of this quest.
