The narrator of these stories is the young son of an Anglo-Irish family living in County Wicklow where fighting between the IRA and the Free State Army continued throughout 1922. Through his vivid accounts, we feel the anxiety of his stongly pro British parents during the IRA incursions into their home and appreciate the conflicting loyalties he must resolve when his beautiful young governess falls in love with an IRA trooper. We also share his anguish at the attempts on his father's life and the loss of a pet dog during the burning of his grandparent's home.
