The caveat contained in the opening words of the Tao Te Ching, which essentially cautions us about relying on words to discover that elusive thing called, "truth," (especially when used in its absolute sense), is used as a template to measure the worth of some of our most common (even cherished) beliefs on a range of subjects, from the basic workings of the universe to the dreary complexities of politics. The bottom line is that things aren't always what you think they are, because what you "think" is based upon words, and words are nothing more than hand-me-downs from your culture. And their own language is something that most people don't even bother to question. But when they do, they're often surprised at what they find. As always, Wayne Holland is mesmerizing. His words seem at times to literally fly off the page, and they do so with an energy that's almost irresistible. There's no doubt he's controversial (and downright unconventional), but he's every bit as captivating, and definitely worth reading.

Taking possession of this book could well result in the most conscious year of your life, because it's not a book to simply be read.  It's purposely designed to elicit your comments - in writing.  Of course you may only read it if you wish; the daily thoughts are entertaining enough for that.  But once you encounter the absolutely startling array of Wayne Holland's musings, and his sometimes total disregard for mainstream sensibilities, it's difficult to imagine that you wouldn't want to somehow speak your mind about it.  His talent for pure provocation is extraordinary.    For example, the entry for March 28 reads, "A man of faith never prays."  If you have any religious convictions at all, as most people do, you certainly have something to say about that.  And on October 15, we get this to chew on:  "Somewhere in the universe our life is always happening."  All in all there are 365 daily offerings, a full year's worth, to either deal with, or simply enjoy.

<p>The Bible is without question one of the primary pillars of Western civilization. It is a compelling literary accomplishment to say the least. But thanks to the Church (with a capital 'C') it has - regretfully - become something much more. As the result of centuries of brainwashing and propaganda, motivated no doubt by interests at least somewhat pecuniary, that rather beautiful collection of ancient stories, genealogies, poems and fables has been transformed into a work of art that bears an aspect almost sinister. It has become THE word of God. It is understandable that such a thing could happen in an undereducated barbaric world, but that the masses (the technologically affluent masses, mind you) continues to embrace such a primitive notion is nothing less than astounding. Even a novice philosopher understands that a real God, i.e., a perfect and complete Being, would very likely have little, if anything, to do with mere mortals. And if there were such interaction, it is unlikely in the extreme that a truly pristine Deity would publicize it, or posture with the crass familiarity so evident in the Old Testament.</p>
