This work presents material from a recent symposium, reflecting the state of the art in experimental and applied clinical research in allergies. Papers are in sections on inflammatory effector cells, allergens, immunotherapy and pharmacotherapy, immune effector cells, and diseases of impaired barrier function. The brief papers are presented in a common format, with a summary box, an introduction, notes on materials and methods, and results and discussion. Topics covered include gene-environment interaction, T-cell regulation, basic mechanisms of effector cell function, mast cells, asthma, food allergy, eczema, psychoneuroallergology, and drug reactions. Some paper topics include gene expression profiling of human mast cell lines, modulation of the IgE response by blocking membrane-IgE, environmental prenatal factors of allergy, parasites and allergy, and development of a mucosal polyvalent allergy vaccine for primary prevention of multisensitization.
