This expanded and revised book will enable teachers to provide numerous fun-filled opportunities for children ages 3 to 7 years to experience the beauty and creativity of music as they explore various ways to move to musical selections. The eight basic activities in this book provide a variety of options for teachers. Each activity begins with a short description, lists the key experiences in movement involved, and outlines the procedure to follow. In addition, from 3 to 8 suitable musical selections are listed for each activity, with separate directions for leading movements to each selection. All the musical selections for the activities are from the authors Rhythmically Moving music series (recordings 1B4); many of these are presented on the CD included with the book.

Meaningful assessment for very young children in child care settings is possible with the Child Observation Record (COR) for Infants and Toddlers. The Infant-Toddler COR looks at the whole child from the ages of 6 weeks to 3 years. Unlike diagnostic instruments that focus narrowly on problems and deficits, the COR focuses on childrenÂ's strengths. By providing a complete and accurate picture of each infantÂ's or toddlerÂ's developing abilities, the COR helps caregivers do a better job of supporting the development of individual children and of planning for the group as a whole. The COR is observation based. Information for completing the COR is gathered by those who know children best-their caregivers and parents. Adults record COR observations as they care for, play with, and attend to children rather than during artificial testing situations. Individuals from outside the program may also use the COR for research or evaluation purposes. The kit contains all the necessary materials for a yearÂ's observational assessment of up to 12 children. This observational tool (1) Assesses broad areas of child development rather than physical or language milestones or deficits only. (2) Looks at childrenÂ's progress in six key areas: sense of self; social relations; creative representation; movement; communication and language; exploration and early logic. (3) Helps early childhood staff get to know each child better and, based on this, to plan for materials, experiences, and routines that are attuned to each childÂ's abilities and needs. (4) Is based on observations conducted over a period of several months during the normal activities of the program; its use does not alter or disrupt the programÂ's routine in any way. (5) Educates caregivers about child development. (6) Provides a framework for communicating with parents about each childÂ's developmental needs. (7) Provides forms for summarizing the progress of individual children and the group.

The Preschool COR for CD-ROM Kit, Second Edition, can be used as an alternative to the printed version of the Preschool COR, Second Edition. Several helpful features distinguish the COR software from the paper-and-pencil versions of COR forms. The software makes it easy for the user to update and change pieces of information recorded in the COR computerized system. When a new piece of information is available or a modification is needed in the information already stored in the program, the user need only enter the new information once, and the program will automatically update all relevant records, charts, graphs, and reports. The valuable time program staff spend in viewing records for assessment, program planning, teacher/observer self-assessment, and report writing is reduced considerable by the software's ability to call up the necessary information quickly and in any order that is needed. Another unique feature of the software is its ability to automatically compile and analyze COR ratings both for individual children and for the group, and then to present these findings in both graph and narrative form. The Preschool COR-Validated, Research-Based Assessment for Your Preschool, Head Start, or Home-Based Program Informative and User-Friendly! The Preschool COR is an observational assessment tool for children aged 21/2 to 6 years. It is designed to measure childrenÂ's progress in all early childhood programs (including but not limited to those using the High/Scope educational approach). It looks at 32 dimensions of learning in six broad categories critical for school success: Initiative, Social Relations, Creative Representation, Movement and Music, Language and Literacy, and Mathematics and Science. Teaching staff gather information to complete the COR in the course of everyday program activities, so COR assessment is seamlessly integrated with early childhood teaching and planning. The results provide detailed information on each childÂ's development, as well as a variety of group reports analyzing progress for various audiences. The Preschool COR Kit provides the materials needed for assessment, curriculum planning, and reporting to parents for a group of 25 children. The second edition of the Preschool COR has been revised and expanded to better meet the needs of early childhood educators for meaningful assessment directly tied to teaching and curriculum planning. While the basic process of using the Preschool COR has not changed (those already using COR assessment will make a smooth and easy transition to this new version), materials have been added to make it easier to collect information on each child, to inform parents about the COR process, and to plan teaching strategies around COR results. Developmental indicators have been revised to provide closer alignment with the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework and the High/Scope key experiences.
