Volume two includes my notes and commentary on chapters nine through sixteen of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Here initially we meet with the burning question of the rejection of Yeshua as Messiah by the nation of Israel. Nothing, in my opinion, is more central to the issue of biblical theology than the salvation of Israel. Indeed, at its core, the whole doctrine of salvation as laid out in the Scriptures is bound up with God’s promise of salvation to Israel. To neglect the latter is to negate the former. Or to put it another way: everyone whom God has chosen to receive eternal salvation in His Son, Yeshua, has a vital connection to the final and ultimate salvation of God’s chosen nation, Israel. For Paul, salvation in and through Yeshua the Messiah cannot be divorced from God’s ultimate plan to save Israel on a national scale. This is clear from the consistent way in which Paul views the salvation of the Gentiles as bound up with the promise made to Abraham. Since the Gospel can be summarized in the promise that all the families of the earth would be blessed in Abraham’s Seed (Gal 3:8), and since Paul has gone to great lengths to show that Abraham is the father of all who believe (Rom 4), it follows that, for Paul, and thus for us, the locus of God’s salvific work is the covenant people of Israel. For Pauline theology, chapters nine, ten, and eleven of Romans are key for understanding this core issue.

<p>The majority of studies on Paul have taken a similar perspective—one well entrenched in the contemporary Church. This perspective might be generally characterized as follows: When Paul came to faith in Jesus, he underwent a conversion from one religion (Judaism) to another (Christianity). He left the works-based religion of Judaism for the new grace-based religion of Christianity. In his conversion, he came to realize that Judaism was based upon works because it continued to cling to the Law. Thus, he taught against the Law (Torah) in order to unshackle the people from its burden and bring them to see the liberty of grace in Jesus. As the Apostle to the Gentiles, he consistently led them away from Torah, fearing they might be trapped in its legalism the same way his own people were. But can such a perspective be honestly maintained if Paul is read objectively? Did he convert to Christianity? Did he invent Christianity? Did Christianity as we know it even exist in his day? And what about the many times he appeals to the Torah as proof of his message? How could he describe the Torah as “holy,” “righteous,” and “good,” and commend its message as “spiritual,” while at the same time teaching it was burdensome and something to be avoided? In The Letter Writer, Tim Hegg reveals a different Paul—one who maintained his Jewish identity and love of Torah; an Apostle of Yeshua the Messiah who not only lived an obedient Torah-life himself, but expected those he taught to do the same. In The Letter Writer, Paul is seen to be both the Apostle of grace and of Torah, because the Torah, when received in the context of faith in Yeshua, is God’s revelation of sanctifying grace.</p>

The method Hegg employs is to study each of the biblical texts under consideration, comparing them with the Lxx, Targumim, and rabbinic materials, in order to show not only what the text means, but also how the appearances of the Messiah in the Tanach were understood historically in Israel. From the Introduction The starting point for our study will be, as always, the inspired word of God—the Bible. I take as a foundational presupposition that God exists and that He has truthfully revealed Himself. This revelation is found in the created universe (general) and in the Word incarnate and inscripturated (specific). Thus, the Bible remains for us the sole basis by which we know God as Savior. But the self-revelation of God and His plan for saving sinful people as contained in the Scriptures was given over the course of time. He did not reveal His redemptive plan in its entirety from the beginning. Rather, He revealed it progressively because He intended that historical events themselves (e.g., the covenants enacted with the Patriarchs; the exodus of Israel from Egypt) should be significant components in the revelation of His salvific plan. This being the case, it is an unwarranted expectation that what we find more fully explicated in the Apostolic Scriptures should be equally seen in the Torah. Or to say it positively: the seeds of this doctrine which we find in the Torah and Prophets are in full bloom in the Apostolic Scriptures. This does not mean whatsoever that the doctrines of salvation as they pertain to the soul are the inventions of the Apostles, as some teach, or that Israel understood salvation in strictly temporal terms (i.e., being rescued from one’s national enemies). As we shall see, the Tanach is replete with the revelation both of God’s intentions to save His people from their sins and the method by which He intended to accomplish this salvation.

From the early centuries of the common era, there were always groups of people who believed that Yeshua (Jesus) was the promised Messiah of the Tanach (Old Testament) and also continued to live in accordance with the teaching and laws of Torah. These groups were in the vast minority, however, since the Christian Church had by-and-large adopted the theology that most (if not all) of the Torah (the Law) had been done away. In our own times, a renewed interest in the value of the Torah has taken place, with many who affirm their faith in Yeshua as their Messiah and Savior also desiring to live in accordance with the Torah–its divine wisdom and guidance for all areas of our life.
