This volume introduces the 'European Theater of Operation' series, providing background for study of all the campaigns in the ETO. It focuses on planning of Operation Overlord; D-day, the Normandy invasion; and tactical operations to July 1, 1944, when the Allies were assured of the success of Overlord invasion-the fruition of plans and preparations reaching back as far as January 1942. Like most of the campaign volumes in the 'European Theater of Operations' series, Cross-Channel attack focuses on the division as the basic fighting unit, although it often describes in considerable detail the experiences of battalions and companies on the fragmented fields of Normandy.

The plays devised and the techniques used to attain its ends must be practiced again and again. Frequently it is the loss of effective direction of small units, incident to the battle's toll, which makes for failure rather than success.
