This book seeks to capture and convey something of what it must have been like to have been a photographer between 1840 and the end of the nineteenth century. The earliest practitioners were pioneers in many respects. This book explores what the Victorian studio looked like, what it contained, and what equipment and processes the photographers used. It looks at the styles and formats of early photography and the people who bought it, from the early days, when photographers had to carry out every stage of the process themselves through to the 1880s, when mass-produced materials started to become available over the counter.John Hannavy has been collecting and researching Victorian photography, and writing about it, since the 1970s. He is the author of eighteen other books on photography, Dr Hannavy is Head of Art and Design at Bolton Institute. By the time the first photographs were taken at war in the 1850s, the idea that 'the camera cannot lie' was already firmly embedded in the Victorian psyche. Photographs were truth, in a way the work of the war artist could never be. Long exposures and cumbersome equipment, however, meant that for the first few decades the medium could not capture action. Out of that early period came the celebrated - but rather prosaic - photographs of Roger Fenton in the Crimea, and the more realistic images of the American Civil War a decade later. War photography had been a reality for nearly fifty years before the reproduction of photographic images became possible in the daily press, restricting sales to subscription lists, print shops and photographic studios. For commercial reasons, photographers censored themselves - if the images shocked, they might be unlikely to sell. Once reproduction in magazines and newspapers became possible, official censorship began.
Through a rich selection of images - many of them never-before published - this book tells the story of the photographers who chronicled Britain's Victorian and Edwardian wars.

Tourism - a product of the Victorian era, hugely developed through Edwardian times - generated thousands of fascinating books and photographs which together define the development of the massive industry which we know today. 
This book explores Victorian and Edwardian Britain through the guidebooks which were published between 1850 and 1910, and the images which tourists bought and collected. The introduction of statutory holidays, the increasing wealth of the Victorian middle classes, and the expanding railway and steamship networks, all helped develop the emerging tourist industry - and, of course, the invention of photography at around the same time led to the widespread craze for collecting photographs of places visited. 
Pre-eminent in the evolution of tourism for the masses was Thomas Cook, whose package holidays were not the first, but whose prices expanded the market hugely. The package tour increased demand for descriptive texts, and early guidebooks by Sylvan, A. &amp; C. Black and others, and later Baedeker, give us a rich source of contemporary accounts.
The early years of the 20th century saw the emergence of the photographic postcard and, for wealthier travellers at least, the Edwardian years were marked by the increasing popularity of amateur travel photography. 
All these themes and developments are explored, and the combination of contemporary accounts and images make this a highly engaging book.
