This beautifully illustrated book documents Pickett’s Charge, an ambitious and timely project by renowned artist Mark Bradford. Eight new paintings extend nearly four hundred feet to form a 360-degree experience encircling an entire floor of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. Bradford’s monumental installation is inspired by the 1883 cyclorama painted by Paul Philippoteaux to commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg, which has been considered the critical turning point of the Civil War and, consequently, of American history. Elements from Philippoteaux’s paintings are among multiple layers of collaged paper that Bradford has scraped through to reveal hidden textures and complexities, and this interplay—between past and present, between the legible and the mysteriously evocative—encourages a reconsideration of history’s conventional linear narratives. The catalogue features an interview with the artist by Stéphane Aquin and an essay by Evelyn Hankins that situates the site-specific project within a broader art historical context. With lavish images of the paintings and their installation, including two gatefolds, this book records a significant new contribution to socially engaged American art.

</ul>Having worked as an artist for more than sixty years, Markus Lüpertz has achieved the highest recognition internationally as a result of the suggestive power and archaic monumentality of his painting style. The prince among painters is today among the most outstanding artists of the present. As a young painter in the 1960s, he already stood apart from the crowd, countering the tendencies of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art with simple figurative motifs. It was at this this time that he invented 'dithyrambic painting', in which figurative contents merge with one another in an expressive manner. In addition to this intensive relationship between figuration and abstraction, German history also plays a central role in Lüpertz's early work. Using symbolic German motifs such as, for instance, steel helmets, he found his way to a very personal iconography. Then followed phases of 'style painting,' which liberates itself from tangible contents, 'mythological painting', and landscape painting. A richly illustrated volume that spans a wide arc from the visionary beginnings to the most recent works of this unique artist, is published in conjunction with the first extensive presentation of Markus Lüpertz's work in the United States. Combining humor with references to literature, pop culture, metaphysics and personal history, German-born, New York– and Marfa-based painter Charline von Heyl (born 1960) creates paintings that offer in her words, “a new image that stands for itself as fact.” This catalog is published on the occasion of her show at Washington DC's Hirshhorn Gallery and Sculpture Garden, her largest US museum survey. The catalog was designed in close collaboration with von Heyl, with a new painting created specifically for the cover and a rare Z-fold binding that effectively separates the images and texts into two connected yet independent, mirror-image books.
