Colonel Dickson brings unusual qualifications to an intimate study of the Dadwin (more popularly, though inaccurately, known as the Bedouin). He was born in Syria, where his father was British Consul, he spoke Arabic from babyhood. As an infant he had the good fortune to be foster-mothered by a Badawin woman of the desert, and thus automatically became a blood-brother of her tribe, the important and aristocratic 'Aniyah. H spent every available holiday in his black tents, camping and trekking with the Dadawin as one of them, and being permitted the unheard-of-privilege of friendship with their womenfolk. He was seen to catch two glimpses of the almost-sacred, jealously-guarded Black Camels of the Mutair, and to enjoy a draught of their milk. He gives details of their daily life, an insight into their wanderings, ways and wiles, and a form of life doomed to extinction. A wonderful look at history, from an Englishman's eye, of Arabian life.
