London’s modest eighteenth-century houses―those inhabited by artisans and laborers in the unseen parts of Georgian London―can tell us much about the culture of that period. This fascinating book examines largely forgotten small houses that survive from the eighteenth century and sheds new light on both the era’s urban architecture and the lives of a culturally distinctive metropolitan population.
Peter Guillery discusses how and where, by and for whom the houses were built, stressing vernacular continuity and local variability. He investigates the effects of creeping industrialization (both on house building and on the occupants), and considers the nature of speculative suburban growth. Providing rich and evocative illustrations, he compares these houses to urban domestic architecture elsewhere, as in North America, and suggests that the eighteenth-century vernacular metropolis has enduring influence.

This volume is an account of the architecture contained within London Zoo. Based on a survey carried out in 1992, when the Zoo faced closure, this book includes detailed descriptions of all the buildings, monuments and other structures of the Zoo, accompanied by photographs. Structures of note include Tecton's Penguin Pool of 1934, an example of early modernism; the Northern (Snowdon) Aviary of 1962-4 and the Elephant and Rhino Pavillion of 1962-5. Less well known is the pioneering use of concrete in the Mappin Terraces of 1913 and some of the interesting interiors which are described and illustrated in detail. This book also contains an introduction to the Zoo's development and the issues raised by its architecture. Throughout its history the Zoo's buildings have reflected the twin demands of animal preservation and animal display, making them a barometer of changing perceptions of animals and their welfare.

Much has been written about Georgian London and its street architecture but far less about the arrangements for everyday life behind the street facades. Sir John Summerson's Georgian London of 1945 identified a standard type of house plan in the Metropolis but since then scholars have unearthed a much more diverse picture. This book, by two leading experts, has an informative introduction and uses specially drawn plans and accompanying photographs to chart the wide range of London's street architecture in the long Georgian period. The studies range from the small but respectable one-room houses of the East End (now almost all demolished as slums), to the more comfortable and familiar arrangements of the grander houses in the West End.
