Quant à moi, certaines personnes, de vieilles connaissances, avec qui j'étais en affaire, ont appris mes découvertes concernant les conjectures mathématiques. ces gens ne sont pas, c'est le moins que l'on puisse dire, particulièrement pacifiques. ni patients. ils m'ont offert des sommes considérables pour que je leur cède mes démonstrations. j'ai refusé. ils vont revenir, à la nuit tombée. tu peux me croire, pierre, ils n'auront pas mes démonstrations! je vois les brûler sitôt que j'aurai terminé celle lettre. s'il devait m'arriver malheur et pour ne pas qu'elles soient perdues à jamais, m'inspirant des akousmata pythagoriciennes, je les ai confiées oralement à un fidèle compagnon qui saura s'en souvenir.
