The son of professional musicians Robin Gregory was educated at Christ’s Hospital and St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge, where he took an honours degree in chemistry and biology. Most of his working life since then has been spent in teaching these subjects at a public school in Sussex. He became particularly interested in wind instruments at an early age and began by playing the oboe. Later he turned to the horn as a result of discovering this instrument while moving. So strong a hold did it gain over him that, ever since, it has been his major preoccupation outside his work.
