For readers of "Father and Son" in this century it is difficult to credit this factual and indeed well-documented chronicle of religious fanaticism in the middle of the last. We have grown used to hysterical outbursts of anger against "the older generation"; how infinitely more telling is the calm, measured, and often humorous style in which Edmund Gosse records the mental straitjacket of his early years in London and Devon. The elder Gosse was a marine zoologist of considerable repute; he was also a Plymouth Brother and a man of such unbending and fundamental Christianity that, in an effort to reconcile geology and Genesis, he publicly challenged the findings of Darwin and others during the controversy over evolution. But what (assisted by his first wife, the godly daughter of a New England tradition of Puritanism) he did to the mind of a brilliant and sensitive son was far worse. That Edmund Gosse remained sane is extraordinary; that he so far triumphed over the stifling dogmas of his childhood to write this gentle masterpiece and to contribute substantially to English literary criticism is a miracle.

Father and Son, a memoir first published anonymously in 1907, was Gosse's second book and is arecord of his struggle to 'fashion his inner life for himself.' The book describes Edmund's early years in an exceptionally devout Plymouth Brethren home. His mother, who died early and painfully of breast cancer, was a writer of Christian tracts. His father was an influential, though largely self-taught, invertebrate zoologist and student of marine biology who, after his wife's death, took Edmund to live in Devon. The book focuses on the relationship between a sternly religious father who rejects the new evolutionary theories of his scientific colleague Charles Darwin and the son's gradual coming of age and rejection of his father's fundamentalist religion. FATHER AND SON was published anonymously in 1907, and as its title suggests quite simply, it dwells on the ultimate connections of mind and heart between a man and his son. The elder Gosse, a zoologist of some repute, suffered great intellectual agony over the conflict between his scientific knowledge and his severely fundamentalist religious principles. He attempted a justification of geology in the light of Genesis and failed. All the ideological ferment of the age of Darwin was background to Edmund Gosse's youth, and the private, painful disillusionment of his own father's hopes of contributing a solution to the enigma of science versus Scripture had a profound influence on his childhood experience.
