Moment Theory is not a new subject; however, in classical treatments, the ill-posedness of the problem is not taken into account - hence this monograph. Assuming a "true" solution to be uniquely determined by a sequence of moments (given as integrals) of which only finitely many are inaccurately given, the authors describe and analyze several regularization methods and derive stability estimates. Mathematically, the task often consists in the reconstruction of an analytic or harmonic function, as is natural from concrete applications discussed (e.g. inverse heat conduction problems, Cauchy's problem for the Laplace equation, gravimetry). The book can be used in a graduate or upper undergraduate course in Inverse Problems, or as supplementary reading for a course on Applied Partial Differential Equations.

About the Author R. Gorenflo (1930–2017) received his doctorate from the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1960 for his work on complex functions. Then from 1974, after several engagements as an applied mathematician in a number of scientific and industrial Institutions, since 1974 he served as a Professor at the Free University Berlin, where he retired in 1998, remaining an active researcher. Since the 1960s he was actively interested in fractional integral equations and diffusion problems, leading him to a close collaboration with F. Mainardi and other researchers, focusing on fractional differential equations and related special functions, with a particular emphasis on modeling physical processes. A.A. This conference proceedings reflects the aim of a workshop on «Applied Functionalanalysis: Variational Methods and Ill-Posed Problems», held at the Free University Berlin in 1981. The objective was to develop mathematical models for various physical processes such as solidification problems, identifications in chemical reactions and to discuss certain control aspects in this context. Modern mathematical analysis was presented to prove existence, uniqueness and stability results as well as to develop numerical algorithms for actual computations. This conference proceedings demonstrates the high standard of modern mathematics in describing difficult behaviours of certain physical systems.
