Books and articles on the subject have proliferated, and all across the Third World governments have become commited to it, setting up large new departments and even ministries. Charles Gore argues that this growing popularity of regional planning in developing countries is profoundly paradoxical.

This book explores the roles of contemporary urban shrines and their visual traditions in Benin City. It focuses on the charismatic priests and priestesses who are possessed by a pantheon of deities, the communities of devotees, and the artists who make artifacts for their shrines. The visual arts are part of a wider configuration of practices that include song, dance, possession and healing. These practices provide the means for exploring the relationships of the visual to both the verbal and performance arts that feature at these shrines. The analysis in this book raises fundamental questions about how the art of Benin, and non-Western art histories more generally, are understood. The book throws critical light on the taken-for-granted assumptions which underpin current interpretations and presents an original and revisionist account of Benin art history.

A great deal of Scottish fiddle music was collected and composed by individuals who have largely faded from memory, not because their work is in any way inferior, but simply because the collections they published have become very difficult to find. Whereas the better-known quote fiddler-composers (like Gow and Marshall) have been kept in the public eye by writes, artists, and the music publishing world, others are now all but forgotten. A reservoir of quite excellent dance music -- strathspeys, reels, quicksteps, as well as jigs-- remains to be rediscovered. This book contains music from a half-dozen of the lesser-known talents of the period 1780-1820. Call it a first step towards rekindling the quest for the hems of the Scottish repertoire. There is plenty more where these came from All the music in this volume adheres to the composers' original published versions of the melodies, and adds chord symbols to supply the original bass part.
