This twelve volume series is based on the work of the University of Hertfordshire’s Centre for Regional and Local History which, with the help of local historians and genealogists, has computerized the records for the 167,298 individuals recorded as living in Hertfordshire in the 1851 Census. This is the first fully mature and reliable English census and this is the first time its results have been computerized and analyzed for an entire English county. It provides a mine of fascinating information about mid-19th-century society of great historical importance and local interest.

This title is the second volume in a series based on the work of the University of Hertfordshire Centre for Regional and Local History which with the help of local historians and genealogists has computerized the records for the 167,298 individuals recorded as living in Hertfordshire in the 1851 Census. In addition to the detailed study of the city of St Albans itself, this second volume in the 12-volume series covers the surrounding hamlets of Sleapshyde, Smallford, Tyttenhanger, the Colneys, Bricket Wood, Park Street, Frogmore and Leverstock Green, and the neighbouring villages of Harpenden, Redbourn, Sandridge and Wheathampstead, a total population of 17,991. Part One presents an historical analysis of the census, covering topics such as population, age, sex and marital structure, cottage industries, the straw and Brazilian hat trade, the employment of women and children, regional farming economy, migration, and the composition of the family and household. It pays particular attention to the urban/rural contrasts that existed within an essentially symbiotic relationship. Part Two contains the census returns themselves. This data provides opportunities for further historical analysis, some insights into the circumstances of particular individuals and their families, and should be of interest to both the family historian and genealogist. The book is also appropriate for National Curriculum secondary school studies in local history.

Immigrants in Tudor and Early Stuart England

<p>It is now over 100 years since Cunningham wrote Alien Immigrants to England, which focused heavily upon the impact of immigration in later 16th and early 17th century England. It has yet to be supplanted by a comprehensive, up-to-date survey. Although much research has been completed on the subject, particularly during the past three decades, relatively little of this has appeared in mainstream history journals, while more general surveys have tended to concentrate upon the second wave of migration that followed the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. This book is a major reassessment of the size, nature, status, impact (economic, social, cultural), and international connections of Dutch and French immigrants in Tudor and early-Stuart England, written by a team of internationally recognized scholars. The volume comprises three sections. Part One examines aspects of immigrant communities in England, including their origins, legal status, the situation within the labor market and government policy towards immigrants. Part Two focuses upon their impact, particularly in economic and cultural terms, but also with regard to their reception by, and assimilation within, the host communities. Part Three discusses aspects of the continuing relationship between immigrants and the wider international community.</p>
