This political history of Mexican Americans analyzes and interprets the last fifty years in the movimiento. Written by a leading Chicano historian who spent many years as an activist, this study evolved from Juan Gómez-Quiñones's participation and reflection.
Examined are the leaders and organizations that waged struggles for political rights as well as the evolution of their goals and strategies. Beginning in the 1940s, Mexican Americans viewed the advocacy process in party politics, coupled with the selected use of the courts, as effective means to redress problems. But by the mid-1930s, the persistence of discrimination, inequality, and poverty led many to question the so-called gains make through piecemeal reform. A new style of politics, based on wide mobilization and an insistence upon democratic rights, coalesced into an ethnic populism known as the Chicano movement.
Today, the Mexican American community in the United States remains committed to securing a more socially just life, But its political expression is often confused because, in the jumble of competing voices and self-serving conservatism, the true majority of the Mexican American community--the workers--are often overlooked and unheeded.

This sweeping and original synthesis reinterprets borderlands history from the Mexican perspective. The region included today in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas formed the far northern frontier of New Spain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. After 1821 it became a part of the newly independent Mexico, which soon lost the land north of the Rio Bravo (or the Rio Grande) to the expanding United States. Explored here are the varying experiences over nearly 350 years of Mexicans living in lands north of the Rio Bravo. Professor Gomez-Quinones examines Mexicans' interactions first with Indians and then Anglos and delineates what changes occurred in Mexican and Mexican-American identity and political consciousness. This new interpretation of Mexicans in borderlands history emerges from a wide-ranging analysis including politics and governance, repression and violence, gender and ethnicity, hegemony and ideology, and cultural and social change.

Historians of labor in the United States have given scant attention to Mexican American workers and their trade union activity. Juan Gómez-Quiñones's panoramic history summarized the origins of this work force and the social and economic changes the workers experienced as industrialization and capitalism transformed employment in the nineteenth century. He focus on the southwest and California in particular in recounting worker efforts to organize trade unions over the past one hundred years. As he traces the historic evolution of struggles to gain economic equity and ethnic and gender equality, Gómez-Quiñones introduces the individual experiences of many courageous workers. For example, Francisco Medrano began as a pick-and-shovel man in a Texas quarry in 1939, then got on-the-job training that enabled him to join the United Auto Workers union, where he was the only Chicano in a membership of 30,000, and went on to organize industrial workers throughout Texas and in the 1960s to link labor causes to civil rights and political campaigns.

He focuses on the Southwest and California in particular in recounting worker efforts to organise trade unions over the past one hundred years. As the author traces the historic evolution of struggles to gain economic equity and ethnic and gender equality, he introduces the individual experiences of many courageous workers.

This book provides a long-needed overview of the Chicana and Chicano movement's social history as it grew, flourished, and then slowly fragmented. The authors examine the movement's origins in the 1960s and 1970s, showing how it evolved from a variety of organizations and activities united in their quest for basic equities for Mexican Americans in U.S. society. Within this matrix of agendas, objectives, strategies, approaches, ideologies, and identities, numerous electrifying moments stitched together the struggle for civil and human rights. Gómez-Quiñones and Vásquez show how these convergences underscored tensions among diverse individuals and organizations at every level. Their narrative offers an assessment of U.S. society and the Mexican American community at a critical time, offering a unique understanding of its civic progress toward a more equitable social order.
