From the Preface: This publication originated in connection with an exhibition of the same name presented at the Hagley Museum and Library from August through December 2002.  Its real beginnings, however, lay in Hagley's acquisition of important materials from the person archive of Raymond Loewy at an auction at Christie's in Beverly Hills in May of 2001. Hagley is a museum and an independent research library devoted to the history of American business and technology in their wider settings. Industrial design is one of the institution's collecting interests.  Raymond Loewy was a figure of international significance in the economic and social history of the twentieth century, and it was clear that these personal archives contained a rich trove of images and information not previously available.This is not a history of the Loewy organizations and it is not a biography, thought it has elements of both. Instead it is an extended interpretive essay with illustrations.  It seeks to describe the work of Raymond Loewy and his offices and to place him in the wider context of design's role in the consumer society of the twentieth century. he was the best-known figure in his profession, and his long life and the extraordinary range of his firms' activities touched almost every aspect of daily existence in the material civilization of the twentieth century.Loewy had the rare gift for understanding American consumers and what would appeal to them. He especially knew how to harmonize the new with the old so that change came but was not too harsh or too rapid. His hybrid American version of modern design had an up-to-the minute look and feel. But it did not reject the past, and it valued comfort, convenience, and informality.
