"Unmonumental: The Object in the 21st Century" is the first exhibition in the "Unmonumental" cycle, and explores the reinvention of sculptural assemblage. Using found, fragmented, and discarded materials, the works of the artists on view make a case for modesty, informality, and improvisation. The exhibition includes more than one hundred objects by thirty artists who represent a wide range of backgrounds and artistic strategies.

The Keeper accompanies an exhibition dedicated to the act of preserving objects, artworks and images. Through a variety of imaginary museums, personal collections and unusual assemblages, it offers a reflection on the impulse to save both the most precious and the apparently valueless, and reveals the devotion with which artists, collectors, scholars and hoarders have created sanctuaries for endangered images and artifacts. Through works spanning the 20th century, The Keeper tells the stories of various individuals through the objects they chose to safeguard. Some, such as Roger Caillois’ collection of rare stones and Harry Smith’s string figures, pursue a universal syntax. Other collections were not so much kept as withheld, such as Hilma af Klint’s suite of abstract paintings from 1906–15, which she kept hidden for decades after her death, venturing that her work would be better appreciated beyond her own time. Shinro Ohtake’s feverishly collaged scrapbooks burst with found materials as free associations of images and everyday ephemera. In a ceremonious personal custom, Ye Jinglu had a studio portrait of himself taken every year for decades. These photos, preserved by Tong Bingxue, represent collecting as a mode of auto-ethnography that inadvertently also traces social and political changes over time. The centerpiece of the book is a vast display conceived by Ydessa Hendeles, composed of over 3,000 family-album photographs of people posing with teddy bears, and vitrines containing antique teddy bears.

The word “ostalgie” emerged in Germany in the 1990s to describe a then-burgeoning nostalgia for the era prior to the collapse of the Communist Bloc and the breaking up of countries formerly united under Communist government. Ostalgia looks at the art produced in these countries--some of which did not even formally exist two decades ago--bringing together the work of more than 50 artists from 20 countries across Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Republics. Many of these works, by seminal figures and younger artists alike, offer a series of reportages on life and art under Communism and in the new post-Soviet countries. Eschewing a chronological perspective, Ostalgia instead establishes a series of dialogues between different generations and geographies, revealing local avant-garde practices and highlighting their international affinities. Pier Paolo Calzolari, born in 1943 in Bologna, is recognized as a leading figure of the Arte Povera movement and a seminal artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, video, audio, text, performance, installation, architecture, light, and video. Through the use of both ordinary and unconventional materials, such as lead, salt, neon, ice, tobacco, moss, fire, and butter, Calzolari explores transformation of matter and ephemeral states—exploiting an underlying fragility in his materials.
