Even if you have never read a page of Robert Heinlein’s work, you have probably heard of line families. Monastic orders are line families that have, in some cases, lasted for centuries. Many of the richest families on Earth use line family concepts to maintain stability, increase power and grow wealth. A similar situation occurs when polyamorous people fall in love and choose to live together in multi-adult households. We know of poly families that have been together for over 30 years. During that time three or four working adults can accumulate a strong portfolio, pay off real estate and acquire other assets. Then what? While the book is slanted towards polyamorous people, there is a lot of practical information for single adults, unmarried couples and parents of children under the age of 18. We discovered state laws that severely limit the sexual activity of consenting single adults. We found that all 50 states have laws that automatically impose a legal status on committed, unmarried couples after 2 or 3 years – even if your state never had common-law marriage. We describe how to protect children if the legal parents are imprisoned, die or are judged mentally incompetent. . We believe a line family will provide its members with financial security, emotional health and love and sharing. None of the individual things we talk about are new or exotic; however, the framework of the line family as a semi-conjugal unit is a new form of an extremely old, pre agricultural social arrangement. People gather together for many reasons. A group of 4 or 5 pilots might pool resources to purchase, maintain and fly an airplane. People form investment clubs to gain the financial leverage of a larger sum of money for investment. Friends gather together to help someone in their community move to a new apartment or house. . Creating A Line Family is a book of tools, not rules.

This book reads Alfred Hitchcock as a philosopher of what constitutes the erotic. The author argues that Hitchcock is doing a post-Nietzschean, postmodern kind of philosophy in which he is exploring and creating possibilities of what the erotic can feel like and how the erotic can be expressed.The erotic is a pervasive phenomenon in Hitchcock's films. It involves irony, play, and sophistication, and there can be erotic failures as well as erotic successes. The erotic is most complexly explored by Hitchcock in his two masterpieces from the 1950s: Vertigo (1958), a story of the failure of the erotic, and North by Northwest (1959), in which the erotic is consummated in marriage. The author argues that Hitchcock has a philosophical theory about what makes the difference. It is a version of existential philosophy that understands what a person is to be based on what they make of themselves through their choices. The author argues that the erotic for Hitchcock is a process of mutual, reciprocal creation of the personality of the other person. This process is complicated by the fact that as one attempts to create the person one desires, one is simultaneously being created by that other person, and so what one desires is also in a process of being recreated in the mutual reciprocal dance of the erotic entanglement.
