This Romeo Juliet story set in the mountains of Virginia in the 1870s depicts a life and time largely forgotten now Jimmie Sue a white farm boy and Madeleen a colored sharecropper girl although mutually attracted to each other must deal with a greater obstacle than having different family names such as the Capulets and Montagues in Shakespeare Jimmie Sue was not so interested in a sheet of paper to certify their relationship but Madeleen would have no part of an arrangement that was not blessed of the Lord Their shared experiences in the fields the churches the baptism creek give them many contact opportunities which are duly celebrated yet constantly thwarted Although the focus is on these two teenagers the story gives some insight into the post civil war racial relationships in the mountains quite different from the more normally accepted tales of the plantations

By the time E. Reid Gilbert graduated high school, his family had lived in twelve different houses, each of which provided experiences that would ripple throughout the rest of his days. Second house. Two-year-old Reid toddles down the middle of a busy highway to join the gypsies who camp behind the Colvard's General Store. Though his mother retrieves him before he reaches his destination, she can't extinguish his desire for exploration and adventure. Fourth house. Reid proposes to Nancy, a neighbor. She accepts, then marries another just weeks later. Turns out that women -- even those who share banana-and-peanut butter sandwiches -- tend not to get permanently involved in a romance with four-year-olds. Sixth house. Horrified to discover that the state of Virginia won't let him attend until he reaches his sixth birthday, he rectifies this injustice by enrolling in school the next year and staying for the rest of his life. Twelfth house. World War II ends. For the first time since the fifth grade, Reid can plan for a future that doesn't involve fighting overseas. The open road to various careers, people and experiences now lies ahead. Twelve houses, twelve lifetimes. Through a humorous, but empathic, glimpse into the past, Reid reveals the numerous ways an adult self is shaped by the seemingly ordinary events of our early years.

Reid Gilbert has been engaged in theatre as a playwriter, performer, mime, choreographer, director of a major center for mime in Spring Green, WI, a student of Kabuki and Indian Kathakali Dance, as well as having written his infamous 100 Limericks for 100 Days of Trump, and multiple books in his octogenarian years. He continues his writing at 88 years of age, with his next book documenting his approach to physical acting and movement for the stage. This collection of nine plays and one screenplay capture his creative prowess in all of its tragi-comic temperament. Here, are stories of race and the south where he grew up as a boy, and the skill of an actor/playwright who has known both sides of theatre, from performing to directing and playwriting -- a lovely summary of his work to date for stage and screen.

One anonymous reader in NY wrote after reading Gilbert's earlier book, "I read the whole book three times and laughed and laughed. Thanks for writing it." Comic relief is aptly named.
