Buchner's special quality, and that which makes him seem more contemporary than almost anything written today, is his total, uncompromising honesty of emotion and intellect. The German writer Georg Buchner, who died in 1837 aged 23, left only three works for the theatre. Danton's Death, his great fresco of the French Revolution, was written in five weeks when Buchner was under threat of arrest for his own revolutionary activities. His sad comedy, Leonce and Lena, was composed in haste for a publisher's competition for which it was entered too late. The extraordinary proletarian tragedy Woyzeck was left unfinished at Buchner's death. Virtually unknown until the end of the nineteenth century, the plays have found an important place in the modern international repertory.

Georg Biichner is the only German dramatist of his period whose plays have not only survived both as theater and as literature, but have grown more important, more relevant with the passage of time, observes Michael Hamburger. Biichner, who died in 1837 at the age of twenty-three, shared less with the Romantic and Neoclassic elements of his own day than with the Sturm und Drang of the 1770s - and through it with the example of Shakespeare. Biichner was a forerunner of the Naturalist school and of the Theatre of the Absurd. His position as a political revolutionary, more radical in his thinking about society than his liberal friends or colleagues, had a great deal to do with his originality as an imaginative writer. The two plays and one short story translated here by Mr. Hamburger exhibit Biichner's preoccupation with the dilemma of freedom and determinism; each of the works illustrates the problem in a different way. Con- structed within a comic, fairy-tale framework, Leonce and Lena investigates the limits on human freedom imposed by social and moral conventions. In this work Biichner displays a satiric wit and a talent for comic dialogue reminiscent of Shakespeare. Woyzeck, the in- spiration for Berg's opera, also deals with convention buf, in a bleak atmosphere of human frailty and tragedy. The short story, "Lenz, " delves deep into the mind of the brilliant, troubled Sturm und Drang writer, J. M. B. Lenz, and reveals his persistent battles with madness. MICHAEL HAMBLBGER is a noted poet, translator, critic, and lecturer, and has published widely.

Written in 1836, Woyzeck is often considered to be the first truly "modern" play.
The story of a soldier driven mad by inhuman military discipline and acute social deprivation is told in splintered dialogue and jagged episodes which are as shocking and telling today as they were when first performed, almost a century after the author's death, in Munich 1913.
This volume contains an introduction and notes by Michael Patterson. The introduction provides biographical background on Buchner, as well detail on the discovery of Woyzeck after so many years of it lying dormant as an apparently 'unreadable' manuscript. It also provides a brief analysis of the play, a study of the historical source that influenced Buchner, the tragic character of Woyzeck and his motivations, the social dimensions of the play, and notes on specific productions, and Mackendrick's translation.
