Information for Foreigners: Three Plays

One of Latin America's most important and prolific writers, Griselda Gambaro has focused on the dynamics of repression, complicity, and violence--specifically, the terror of violent regimes and their devastating effects on the moral framework of society. Information for Foreigners is a drama of disappearance, an experimental work dealing with the theme of random and meaningless punishment in which the audience is led through darkened passageways to a series of nightmarish tableaux. The Impenetrable Madam X is a naughty, comic romp through the fields of desire and pleasure in 19th century Spain. With tongue in cheek, Gambaro concocts hilariously exaggerated scenes of sexual acrobatics, poking fun at virile prowess, aging femininity, heterosexual hypocrisy and homosexual taboos.In this work, Gambaro shuns the well-trodden path to domination and pain for the sometimes frustrating one of erotic union and pleasure. Latent desires are not played out in victimizations of women by men but in a "battle without blood," where the contenders alternate as victors without cruelty and as vanquished without humiliation. Furthermore, Gambaro explores the sensuously boundless space of woman's desire and pleasure, while poking fun at phallocentric sexuality that tends to dominate not only in erotic literature but also in traditional psychoanalytic theories of Western culture as well.

About the Author\nGriselda Gambaro is one of Argentina's foremost dramatists. She was born in Buenos Aires in 1928 into a family of second-generation Italian immigrants. She began writing at the age of 24 but it was in her mid-thirties that she suddenly started to enjoy great recognition and success as a writer. In the early 1960s, Gambaro became involved with the avant-garde arts foundation the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella where she staged a series of four plays: Las paredes (The Walls) (1964), El desatino (The Blunder) (1965), Los siameses (The Siamese Twins) (1967) and El campo (The Camp) (1971). This began her international success which has continued to the present day. Her most recent production was El don at the Teatro Cervantes in 2015. Though her theatre takes the form of many varied aesthetic expressions, on some level Gambaro is always probing the nature of power, our conscience, and theatricality itself.\nDr Gwen MacKeith is a published literary translator, writer and editor. Her expertise lies in translating theatre texts for performance, specifically the plays of internationally acclaimed Argentine dramatist, Griselda Gambaro (1928-). She worked on the creation of the Out of the Wings theatre in translation project between 2008 and 2012 and continues to be a member of this creative collective, https://ootwfestival.com.\nGriselda Gambaro is arguably one of Argentina's most important dramatists, as well as a playwright of international significance, whose poetics not only interpret Argentine reality but transcend cultural and geographical borders. Estas piezas de breve y mediana duracion acompanan cronologicamente las obras de Griselda Gambaro ya publicadas en los volumenes 1 y 2 de esta Coleccion de teatro. Desde Viaje de invierno, que inicia la serie (1969), hasta Antigona furiosa (1986), se caracterizan todas por un planteamiento resuelto con extrema economia de medios, ya que uno de los imperativos de las piezas cortas es no malgastar con complicaciones escenicas la brevedad de su duracion. Esto explica su densidad y eficacia. Pueden rastrearse en ellas las imagenes del poder y la violencia, de la vejez y la soledad, la preocupacion etica y la constante del humor. Humor que parte de viejas fabulas, como en Nosferatu, o de la observacion cotidiana, como en los Cuatro ejercicios para actrices. Algunas de estas obras permanecen ineditas, otras se han estrenado por primera vez en el exterior (El despojamiento, Francia, 1985) o han recorrido el camino inverso, como Decir si, que a partir de su estreno en Teatro Abierto (1981) registra el mayor numero de puestas en escena de todo el repertorio de Griselda Gambaro. El variado destino de estas piezas se unifica felizmente con la publicacion de este volumen. Viaje de invierno, La gracia, El despojamiento, Decir si, Antigona furiosa, hablan del mundo teatral inventado por Griselda Gambaro, un mundo a imagen y semejanza del nuestro, y sin embargo, distinto. Si bien violencias y crueldades estan presentes en el, tambien estan presentes el humor, la relacion afectiva, la solidaridad. Del lector, o espectador, depende la eleccion de las alternativas que estas obras proponen con su implacable, confiada lucidez.
