At the time of the Egyptian Revolution in 1952, the population of Egypt was around 22 million. At the end of 2002, it stood at 69 million, and was growing at a rate of 1.33 million a year. What happens to a society that grows so quickly, when the habitable and cultivable land of the country is strictly limited? After the success of Whatever Happened to the Egyptians?, Galal Amin now takes a further bemused look at the changes that have taken place in Egyptian society over the past half century, this time considering the disruptions brought about by the surge in population. Basing his arguments on both academic research and his own personal experiences and impressions, and employing the same light humor and keen sense of empathy as in his earlier work, the author discusses how runaway population growth has not only profound effects on many aspects of society from love and fashion to telephones, the supermarket, and religion but also predictable effects on the economy.

<p>تبدأ القصه البسيطه بمنظر بحر واسع، يخرج منه رجلان يرتديان ملابسهما الكاملة، ويحملان معا، كل منهما فى طرف، دولابا عتيقا ضخما، يتكون من ثلاث ضلف، وعلى ضلفته الوسطى مرآه كبيرة. يسير الرجلان فى اتجاه الشاطئ وهما يحملان هذا الدولاب بمشقه كبيرة، حتى يصلا الى البرّ فى حاله اعياء شديد، ثم يبدآن فى التجول فى انحاء المدينه وهما لا يزالان يحملان الدولاب. فإذا ارادا ركوب الترام حاولا صعود السلم بالدولاب وسط زحام الرّكاب وصيحات الاحتجاج. وإذا اصابهما الجوع وأرادا دخول مطعم، حاولا دخول المطعم بالدولاب فيطردهما صاحب المكان. لا يحتوى الفيلم الا على تصوير محاولاتهما المستميته فى الاستمرار فى الحياه وهما يحملان دولابهما الثقيل، الى ان ينتهى بهما الأمر بالعوده من حيث اتيا، فيبلغان الشاطئ الذى رأيناه فى اول الفيلم، ثم يغيبان شيئًا فشيئًا فى البحر، حيث تغمرهما المياه وهما لا يزالان يحملان الدولاب. منذ رأيت هذا الفيلم وأنا اتصوّر حالى وحال كل من اعرف وكأن كلاً منا يحمل دولابه الثقيل، يأتى معه الى الدنيا ويقضى حياته حاملا ايّاه دون ان تكون لديه ايه فرصه للتخلص منه، ثم يموت وهو يحمله. على انه دولاب غير مرئىّ، وقد نقضى حياتنا متظاهرين بعدم وجوده، او محاولين اخفاءه، ولكنه</p>
