After the breakup of the Soviet Union, the peoples of Central Asia are seeking to rediscover their heritage, which blends cultural elements from Iran, China, and India. Central Asia in ancient and medieval times was the crossroads of civilization, connecting China with the West. This book provides a concise, authoritative history of the region that includes modern Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, and Xinjiang. The author, who has made many visits to the region and lived in Tajikistan, draws on sources in several Central Asian languages, as well as materials from the fields of archaeology, art history, linguistics, ethnography, and folklore. What we now call Central Asia was part of the empires conquered by Cyrus, Alexander the Great, Timur, and their successors during antiquity and the Middle Ages. At the turn of the millennium, Central Asia became the Turkish center of rule. After the Turkish expansion, political rule belonged to the Turks, but the culture remained Iranian. Over the course of centuries, ancient polytheistic religions gave way to Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and Islam, and merchants founded trading empires around the legendary silk route.

The History of Bukhara

"The History of Bukhara" by Narshakhi is unusual among city histories of the Middle East since it gives information on the origin of the city, its early rulers, and a topography of the city and surrounding villages, rather than merely biographies of religious leaders. The original publication has long been out of date and was oversupplied with footnotes. Richard Frye's translation from the Persian original has been corrected and is presented in a simple, readable form with introduction, commentary and appendices. Bukhara in the tenth century, under the rule of the Samanids, was a cultural centre that rivaled Baghdad, and it was called "the dome of learning in the East'. It was a populous metropolis, capital of the semi-independent dynasty which ruled most of present-day Iran and Central Asia. It was in Bukhara that the so-called 'Persian Renaissance' began, where the Persian language was raised to rival Arabic, and where poetry in the New Persian language was fostered by the rulers. Narshakhi describes life in villages, and how the Sogdian language continued to be spoken; he discusses textiles, coinage, and religious movements. This is a primary source for life in eastern Iran and Central Asia during a period of change in the Islamic world.

The principle city in an oasis in the desert, Bukhara was conquered by the Arab invaders in 674. But it was under the Persian Samanid dynasty that the city reached its height. Its agrarian economy provided products for the caravans which extended its sphere of trade. The political and religious interests of the people were guided by a well-organized bureaucracy. Poetry, music, architecture, and calligraphy flourished. Today Bukhara is in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
