The B-24 Liberator was the most widely used four-engined aircraft of World War II, with a total of 19,256 being built. Built with Pacific distances in mind, the B-24 had a very long range and served the U.S. Army Air Force in both Europe and the Pacific, and also equipped RAF squadrons in Burma. One of the first Thunderbolt groups to see action in the European Theatre of Operations (ETO) with the US Army Air Forces, the 56th Fighter Group (FG) was also the only fighter unit within the Eighth Air Force to remain equipped with the mighty P-47 until war's end. Led by the inspirational 'Hub' Zemke, this group was responsible for devising many of the bomber escort tactics employed by VIII Fighter Command between 1943 and 1945. By VE-Day the 56th FG had shot down 100 more enemy aircraft than any other group in the Eighth Air Force, its pilots being credited with 677 kills during 447 missions. The exploits of this elite fighter unit are detailed in this volume together with photographs, their aircraft profiles and insignia.

From Library Journal Shot down over Germany on his last mission in October 1944, Colonel Hub Zemke ( Zemke's Wolf Pack, LJ 12/89) spent the rest of the war as a POW. A regular army officer and a full colonel at 27, he was appointed senior Allied officer in charge of 9000 American and British prisoners. The go-between for the prisoners and the German administration, he was responsible for the safety, health, and discipline of the inmates of the notorious Stalag Luft I. This prison, like all German POW camps, was not remotely similar to that in Hogan's Heroes . Here everything was in deadly earnest. Hunger, cold, boredom, and brutal guards made life miserable and dangerous. Zemke kept order and discipline in his camp by preventing premature escapes and by protecting the prisoners from the guards, the SS, former slave laborers, and the advancing Soviet Army.
