This publication was prepared in conjunction with the residency and exhibition "Artist and Community: Fred Wilson" (August 6 through September 28, 1994) at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art and Old Salem, Winston-Salem, North Carolina (SECCA). Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 94-68230. It documents the history of Winston-Salem's African-Americans including Wilson's ancestors. There are black and white and color photographs of Winston-Salem, artifacts and Wilson's art work. There is a Bibliography. Fred Wilson (born 1954) is an American installation artist and political activist who received a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" in 1999 and the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award in 2003. Wilson's unique artist approach is to examine, question, and deconstruct the traditional display of art and artifacts in museums. With the use of new wall labels, sounds, lighting, and non-traditional pairings of objects, he leads viewers to recognize that changes in context create changes in meaning.

This 2004 paperback is in new condition. It has one slightly dinged corner on the lower right hand side. The spine is uncracked. A very nice copy of a very useful book for young chess players. When I was removing an old price sticker, I created a rub on the edge of the spine - leaving a narrow white line on where there should be solid red. I was trying to get any sticky residue off. So the book is very clean at this point to be sure.
