"I found this book fascinating because, as the GP involved, I'd talked to Paul throughout his illness and had read all the letters from the Priory; I therefore felt I 'knew it all'. To my great surprise I found there was new material on every page and reading the book has given me a completely new perspective.  From the patient's standpoint, this could be a very helpful book. One problem every GP has encountered is trying to empathise with people when you yourself haven't been through a anything remotely similar. You can almost hear them thinking: 'What does he know!?' I've found that one way round this is to put the person with the problem in touch with someone who's had a comparable experience and come through it successfully. Paul, for example, demonstrates the bewilderment phase, the desperation to make sense of what was going on, something that he has only been able to do with the benefit of hindsight. To be given this book at a receptive stage in an illness could be a lifeline for many in that they would appreciate that, however desperate their present circumstances, there is 'light at the end of the tunnel'.  An autobiographical account such as this can also help relatives and friends who may be traumatised and often have no idea what to do for the best.
