Uncompromising, unembellished, sometimes delapidated, and often featuring careless renovations and additions, more than 1500 Bauhaus structures remain standing in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, monuments that have stubbornly defied the course of time and retained the unbroken utopic spirit of their era. Photographed by Gnter Farg, whose oeuvre encompasses painting, graphic design, sculpture, and a body of architectural photographs of such buildings as the Villa Malaparte and the Wittgenstein House, these villas, studios, and working-class housing developments were designed in the 1930s and 40s largely by architects who had emigrated from Europe. Ariel Sharon, Sam Barkai, Genia Averbuch, Ze'ev Haller, Richard Kauffman, Erich Mendelsohn, and others endeavored to implement the social, technical, and aesthetic principles postulated by the Bauhaus before it was closed down by the Nazis in 1933.

Günther Förg was a genuine space artist!Already in 1978 while he was still at the academy, Günther Förg began working with colored spaces, or rather, wall paintings. He liked to tell, laughing, how obvious that seemed to him, given that during his studies he occasionally earned some extra money as a housepainter. In total, he created over 140 wall paintings, and a selection will now be on show at the Deichtorhallen. Günther Förg had been looking forward to the exhibition at the Deichtorhallen; in an interview, already several years ago, he clearly organized this important body of work into several types: »... the first were vertical, later horizontal wall bisections. Furthermore, there are color sequences with different colored areas placed next to one another. There were rooms where all four walls were painted in different colors. Various paintings were created in public, as well as semi-public spaces. In these works, the architecture is the main focus; the paint emphasizes it and renders it visible. The color bears reference to the place ... Next came murals with flat areas and stripes, and also wall paintings akin to panel painting.« The critic Hans-Joachim Müller put it this way: »Günther Förg was a genuine space artist .«Exhibition: Deichtorhallen Hamburg, 31/7–25/10/2015

You can make something out of nothingSome of the current batch of watercolours were originated on partially sullied sheets of paper, on sheets that had been used either as an underlay for the painting of other watercolours or one that were to hand during this process in order that the artist could dab his brush now and then or test the value of a particular colour. Such literal »working papers« now form the basis for watercolours and paintings, which cover the whole range from cheery fields of paint blots to an intensive encounter between different principles of form. It is self-evident that the quasi self-originating beginnings of this new »pictorial language« also deal with the phenomenon of horror vacui, which on the one hand equivocally demands that the emptiness—the pure white of the canvas—should be done away with and yet in so doing, simultaneously induces a high degree of anxiety, rendering any composition a sheer impossibility. We can forge a connection to French Impressionism, which was quite literally thrown back upon the essence of the blot in its quest for that true visual insight and depiction of the world, as we also could see in these paintings the contemporary answer for that depiction.

Architecture has always been a natural subject matter for photographers, but for most of the twentieth century the practice of architectural photography has been a professional endeavor--anonymous photographs taken for clients for specific, commercial reasons. This book concerns itself with another aspect of the phenomenon: the photography of architecture as an art practice. It considers the work of seven contemporary photographers who use buildings in their work in a new way. In these photographs, they respond to the work of prominent architects with their own singular interpretations. Here are Andreas Gursky's photos of the Stockhom Library by Gunnar Asplund, Thomas Ruff's photos of several works by Herzog &amp; de Meuron, Hiroshi Sugimoto's photos of Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, as well as works by Candida Hofer, Jeff Wall, Gunther Forg and Balthasar Burkhard. Architecture Without Shadow is a beautiful and valuable book on one of the prominent movements in contemporary photography.
